Proposed 2024 USPS Price Increase for Shipping Services

Read about the proposed price increase for all USPS shipping services in 2024, including Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and USPS Ground Advantage
USPS has announced its proposed price increases for 2024, which the agency has filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). The announcement came the same week that USPS released its fiscal year 2023 results, which saw the Postal Service incurring a net loss of $6.5 billion due to declining mail volume and inflationary pressures. If the PRC approves the proposed price increase, the new rates for USPS shipping services will take effect on January 21, 2024.

The Planned Price Increase for USPS Shipping Services in 2024

The price increases, proposed by the USPS Board of Governors, would generally raise prices for all Priority Mail products by about 5.7% across the board. Priority Mail Express service will increase by 5.9%, and prices for USPS Ground Advantage will increase by 5.4% on average.

At the time of publishing this article (November 15th, 2023), it is unclear how much Priority Mail Flat Rate services will increase.

Saving Money on Shipping is More Important than Ever

Higher prices mean lower margins on products, and no online seller is ever happy about an increase in costs. That said, all the major shipping carriers raise prices every year, not just USPS. Prices increase due to market conditions and rising transportation expenses, such as the cost of fuel, and it’s up to shippers to properly prepare for it. Over the past two years, inflation has also been a large driver behind price increases. No matter the cause, the best way to offset USPS price increases is to make sure you’re saving the most money on your USPS shipping labels by using online shipping software.

Similar to going shopping during a sale, online shipping software companies allow you to buy shipping labels at the deepest level of discounts that carriers like USPS offer. For USPS, this pricing level—known as Commercial Pricing—is typically reserved for huge shippers sending out 50,000 or more packages per year. That said, the best shipping software companies let you access these discounts for free. With so many different shipping software options at your disposal, you should never pay full price for your USPS labels…and with the ability to print your postage at home, you’ll never have to go to the Post Office again!
