Amazon is Hiring 250,000 Workers for the 2023 Holiday Season

Amazon looks to bring on 250,000 workers for increased holiday demand, a significant increase from the temporary workers it brought on to help with last year's peak season

Amazon announced that it plans to hire 250,000 employees in the United States to help tackle the anticipated increased demand during the holidays, which sees a surge in shipping volumes each year. The eCommerce giant also said it will increase the average hourly pay for employees who work in its warehouses and carry out deliveries.

Amazon Hiring 250,000 Holiday Workers Marks an Increase of 75% from Last Year

Like all major shipping carriers in the U.S. (USPS, UPS, and FedEx), Amazon hires additional temporary workers during the holidays to help the company handle higher package volume and shipping demand. However, the figure of 250,000 workers that Amazon plans to hire marks an increase of about 150,000 workers that the company brought in during the fourth quarter of last year to staff up for the holidays. In terms of the additional holiday workers, that’s a jump of 75% from the year before.

Amazon’s announcement comes the same month that the company announced its own Amazon Shipping service. Similar to services from other carriers, Amazon Shipping is a non-time-sensitive ground delivery service that allows online sellers to use Amazon’s logistics network to ship packages for orders that weren’t sold on its platform.

How Can I Apply for a Holiday Position at Amazon?

According to the company’s announcement, Amazon’s holiday positions include full-time, part-time, and seasonal warehouse and delivery employees. Hourly wages for those roles will range between $17 and $28, and in some locations, Amazon is also offering signing bonuses between $1,000 to $3,000.  Warehouse and delivery employees are set to earn $20.50 an hour on average during the holidays, up from the current $19 an hour. Amazon reportedly announced the wage increases earlier this month at its conference for members of its contracted delivery partner program.

Interested parties can browse through open positions and apply on Amazon’s website. Candidates can provide their location and filter through opportunities based on what Amazon is hiring for around them, including delivery and warehouse positions.

According to securities filings, Amazon had approximately 1.46 million employees worldwide as of the end of June 2023. It is the second-largest employer in the United States, behind Walmart.
